Creativity is a wonderful thing, but it's the preserve of the weird, isn't it? Not according to Brian Clegg. He reckons you should give yourself a good mental slapping and start thinking creatively |
Creativity - so what? |
Creativity's a strange affair, simultaneously admired and feared. It's not
exactly a compliment to tell someone they haven't an ounce of creativity in
them, yet it's easy to be suspicious of creative types - they're okay as
long as they're kept in a box, but you wouldn't necessarily want one living next
door. Fact is, though, that we've never needed creativity more. In business it's essential. Management guru Tom Peters says that creativity and zest have "become the prime creators of economic value".** It's not enough to keep going with the same tried and tested formula; like Alice's Red Queen you have to work hard just to stay in the same place - you need creativity to move on. It's no exaggeration to say that for many companies the choice is to get more creative or to go under. Exactly the same argument applies to individuals. In today's job market, you can't rely on a big, friendly firm to look after you from first job to retirement. Your ability to survive and grow in the workplace depends on your own flexibility and creativity. Even if you aren't looking to manage your own career, you owe it to yourself to make the most of your talents. Creativity is important - why not get some? |
